.Benjamin Rush, founder of Dickinson College, "advocated the teaching of modern languages and the integration of an international perspective in the curriculum". As of now, 2016, that emphasis on globalism and a broad worldview is still very much in evidence, with a comparative civilizations requirement, multiple study abroad programs, and a sizable international student population. Education Abroad: American Perspective in 1868 is an attempt to identify that same sense of global engagement at Dickinson in the 19th century.
More specifically, this project will explore the myriad motivations of Americans who decided to engage in international travel in the late 1800s through the experiences of John Franklin Goucher, graduate of the Dickinson College Class of 1868. Though mainly designed to appeal to current Dickinson students, Education Abroad will hopefully prompt undergraduates from any institution to think about issues of scale, perspective, and historical representation in a new light.
